Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say washing your hands is the best way to prevent the spread of Norwalk-like viruses and other germs on cruise ships. Here are the agency's tips for on board cleanliness:
-
Wash hands after using the toilet, coughing or sneezing into your hands or touching anything dirty. Also, wash before engaging in any hand-to-mouth contact such as eating, brushing teeth or smoking. Pay attention to the areas between fingers and under nails.
-
Dry hands with a disposable towel, and use that towel to turn off the faucet and open the door.
-
Leave the area if you see someone vomiting, to keep from ingesting contaminated particles that travel through the air. Report that illness to someone on the cruise staff, so they can implement proper cleaning procedures.
-
Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest to rebuild your immune system, and drink water to help prevent dehydration.
-
Be considerate of other passengers. If you have gastrointestinal or other illness before taking a cruise, call your travel agent or cruise line to ask about rescheduling without penalty.
