DISCOVER SIAN KA'AN
February 18-25-, 2012

Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site
while staying at the fabulous
Dreams Tulum Resort
$1,955 per person, double occupancy

One of the most important protected areas in the Mexican Caribbean, the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an (Mayan for “Gift from the Sky”) is a place with an incomparable natural beauty and immense richness in flora and fauna. For these unique characteristics in biodiversity and its cultural treasures Sian Ka’an was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1987.

The Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an has gained significant importance as a destination for ecotourism and sustainable livelihood development projects for local communities. It is known for its biodiversity and various ecosystems, consisting of a mosaic of inland water canals, mangroves, marshes, and tropical lowland forests containing ancient Mayan sites.

There is also an abundance of wildlife including manatees, four species of marine turtles, as well as howler and spider monkey, crocodiles, the rare Jabiru Stork, and some of the most elusive large mammals in the region including jaguar, puma, ocelot and tapir. By 2008, over 370 bird species had been identified, from tiny little birds to giant birds the size of a small person.

Community Tours is a locally-owned tour company offering ecological boat tours within the lagoons and coastal wetlands of Sian Ka’an. The tours are designed for travelers who are seeking to experience the nature in a respectful manner and are interested in learning about various wildlife, Mayan history, cultural heritage and local conservation efforts, and are limited in the number of participants.

We have arranged for three guided tours within the Biosphere.

BIRD WATCHING

Over 350 avian species have been sighted in Sian Ka'an, including the ocelated turkey, the yucatan woodpecker, the yucatan blue jay, the yellow fronted parrot, the yucatan flycatcher as well as other aquatic and terrestrial birds. This 3 hour tour begins at 6:00 am and is conducted around the archaeological site of Muyil. Limited to 6 people at a time.

             MUYIL FOREST AND FLOAT

A Mayan cultural immersion with a local guide who will share the mysteries of Muyil archaeological site. Hike thru the forest to the shore of the turquoise water lagoon of Chunyaxche. There a boat ride is combined with an easy swim. This is a great opportunity to see the deep knowledge the ancient Mayans had about the ecosystems on the Yucatan Peninsula and the intense labor of the modern Mayans to preserve it.

SUNSET WINE AND CHEESE

Take a boat ride through the wetlands, with an opportunity to swim. Visit the Boca Pailla bridge for the sunset and then return to the Sian Ka'an visitors center for wine and cheese
.
