SOLO CRUISING
For those times when you just want to set you own schedule and spend your days doing exactly what you want to do, solo cruising has become the perfect trip for one. With no one else to accomodate, all the choices are yours, including the choice to 'do nothing', and no one can complain. Cruising can be both rejuvenating and exciting, depending on what you choose to do each day.
It's also a great way to meet people and have a lot of fun. For a cruise with a festive mood and lots of other single passengers, choose a large ship (1200+ passengers) sailing 7 nights or fewer in the Caribbean, the Bahamas orMexico. On a cruise, the atmosphere is social and making friends can be as easy as joining in ship activities and shore excursions.

Fun Cruises for Singles Some cruise lines cater to single customers by hosting special get-togethers. Holland America throws a Solo Traveler's Party each sailing. Orient also hosts singles gatherings.
One popular option for mature, single women is the Gentleman Host or Social Host program. Gentlemen hosts act as companions and dance partners for single women on board. Gentlemen hosts may usually be found on Cunard's Queen Elizabeth II, Voyages of Discovery's, MV Discovery and on most sailings on Crystal and Silversea. Orient and Holland America have Gentlemen Hosts on their longer cruises.

Accommodations for Singles Some cruise lines offer single cabins. Orient's Marco Polo has single cabins (Category K), as does Voyages of Discovery's MV Discovery (Category C). Cunard's QE2 has both inside and outside staterooms available for single travelers (Categories M1 and M2). Cruise West's ships Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of 98 have single cabins, and on their Spirit of Columbia and Spirit of Alaska, you can even book a double room at the single rate (Categories B and C), subject to availability.

"But Won't a Solo Cruise cost a lot more?"
NOT AS MUCH AS YOU MIGHT THINK! One way to cut costs as a single traveler is to participate in a singles share program. Clipper, Cruise West, Delta Queen, Holland America, Orient Cruises, Uniworld and Windjammer will offer to pair you with a roommate of the same sex in a double stateroom. Both singles pay the per person, double occupancy rate, and if no one suitable for you to room with is available, you will get your own double stateroom for the single price. These singles share programs are limited, so you'll need to book early. If you'd rather not share your room or be limited by category, you may pay a single supplement fare. These fares range from 110%-200% of the per person double occupancy. Six-star lines (Crystal, Silversea, Regent and Seabourn) typically charge the smallest supplement for singles. Most other cruise lines charge 150-200% of the per person double occupancy rate for their single supplement fares.
